The Importance of International Tea Day

May 12, 2025 pixlalsie No Comments

International Tea Day, held every year on May 21, is a meaningful date for all of us at BOH, tea producers and our stakeholders Far from being just another date on the calendar, it is a moment to honour the craft of tea-making, the people behind it, and the rich heritage we have carried since 1929.

At BOH, tea is a part of our history, our community, and the land we grow on. International Tea Day gives us a chance to reflect on the journey of tea, the people who make it possible, and its place in daily life.

A Day with Deep Roots

The first International Tea Day was held in 2005 in tea-producing countries such as India and Sri Lanka. It was created to raise awareness about the challenges faced by tea workers and to support fair practices in the industry. In 2019, the United Nations officially declared May 21 as International Tea Day. The day recognises how tea supports rural development, jobs, and communities in many parts of the world.

For us at BOH, it is a reminder of our role and responsibility. Our care for the people who grow and process our tea and our commitment to protect the environment that helps it thrive.

What It Means to Us

International Tea Day is a time to:

  • Appreciate our growers and workers who make every cup possible
  • Focus on sustainable farming methods that keep our highland estates healthy
  • Celebrate Malaysia’s proud tea heritage, which we have shared for 95 years
  • Keep improving how we grow, produce, and share tea for generations to come

Tea is a part of our daily routine. It is our purpose and our pride. It is why International Tea Day matters to us.

@bohteamalaysia Not all therapy comes with a couch. Sometimes, it’s found in a warm sip, a deep breath, and the gentle care of those who grow and craft each leaf. This International Tea Day, we raise our cups to the real heroes of tea-rapy, our tea workers. Thank you, from the tea bushes to our teacups. 🌱🫶 #BOH #bohteamalaysia #BOHTea #Tea ♬ slow piano music(1297827) - syummacha
